Sonographer Conditional Licensure Application

You MUST hold at least one current license in a Primary Modality to apply for a ND Sonographer Conditional License. A primary modality is defined in ND Law 43-62-01(7). You must have a conditional license before you can begin practicing sonography. The conditional license is a two-year license. You will be required to meet certain requirements within the first year to prove you are actively working toward registration. The conditions will be listed in the conditional letter you will received once your license is issued.

There is no fee/charge for this application.

Conditional license is valid for two years and maybe renewed once or upon Board approval. The applicant must submit a request and documentation to renew.

Conditional Licensure Application Process Overview

  1. Complete the Application for Conditional Licensure and submit the necessary documents.
  2. There is no fee or criminal history record check since you are already licensed by the Board.

Prior to beginning the application please ensure you have all the correct documents.

  • If you answered "Yes" to any of the questions in the Personal Background History, an explanation and any relevant documentation as requested at the end of that section must be submitted with the application. If you cannot send a copy of the criminal judgment, please include that in your explanation.
  • A copy of an official transcript of completing a program.
  • If you are intending to train on-the-job instead of attending an academic program, please submit a letter from your employer stating that you will be working your registry requirements.
  • Proof of being registry eligible. Send a copy of passing one of the exams or copy of printout from registry's online page showing you have applied for the exam.

To transition your Conditional to a full sonography license:

  • Successfully pass the registry exam.
  • Submit a copy of your registry card or documentation showing you passed the exam to the Board office with a request to transition your conditional license to a full license.
  • The Board does not mail out license certificates. You may print your license from the Licensee Print Licensure Card.

Once you have a full license, each time you renew your registry (ARRT, ARDMS, CCI, NMTCB, etc.), you must submit a copy of your new registry card to the NDMIRTB office. You can upload your card on the License Account Update page.
